The poems here were in many ways influenced by the works of Carlos Castaneda,
who, at UCLA, studied the use of medicinal plants by the Yaqui Indians of the
Sonoran desert in southwest USA, under the tutelage of Yaqui Don Juan Matus.
Carlos Castaneda is a controversial figure who wrote 12 books about these
medicinal plants – peyote, psilocybin, datura and others – but which also resulted in
his study, under Don Juan Matus, of the spiritual sorcery of his lineage of the
Nagual (Nahuatl) American Indians, which also included some Toltec teachings.
I read all 12 of these books at least three times each – as they were fascinating
and contained many insights into the workings of the human mind, the body and
the world around us. Although many are highly sceptical of the works of Carlos Castaneda,
his poems & “adventures” – I have been able, through the use of
lucid dreaming and other techniques, like via the martial arts of Aikido,
karate and others – and through deep meditation to verify the truth, the reality, of many of his
teachings – the Separate Reality – of the teachings of Don Juan Matus, as relayed
by his protégé Carlos Castaneda and others of his group.
These teachings unavoidably altered my own perceptions of the world and my
attitudes to life, death and all manner of things – including poems & poetry in general.
I am sure that Carlos Castaneda will continue to be a controversial figure,
with many mocking his works – yet millions around the world put their faith, their
lives even, in the hands of religious works, for instance, the Holy Bible,
the Koran etc – which cannot, in any way be verified, but which must simply
be taken on trust – an act of true blind faith.
